I look forward to applying the knowledge gained from my Management MSc to my research and professional endeavours in this field and beyond.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Jorge F. Montenegro and I’m an industrial engineer from Colombia, currently residing in the UAE. I previously taught entrepreneurship at university level and conducted research at several universities in Qatar and the UAE.

I’m currently pursuing an online Management MSc at the University of Liverpool and also work as a research associate and business specialist at Ecoresolve, a research think-tank based in the USA. I’m passionate about travelling, discovering new places, and often kick-start my day with early morning walks.

Why did you choose to study the Management MSc programme?

I chose to study an online Management MSc because it provides a broad, holistic perspective of organisational dynamics, rather than focusing on a single area such as marketing or operations. It equips me with the essential tools to build my career as a manager, enabling me to lead multicultural teams and adapt to today’s fast-paced environment. As managers, we must think creatively and be open to innovative management practices that enhance both organisational performance and growth.

Why did you decide to study online with the University of Liverpool?

Studying online was the best choice for me due to the flexibility it offers – I can work on international projects, travel, and continue to grow professionally and academically.

When choosing a programme, I looked for factors including a responsive and supportive academic team, a globally recognised university, an intuitive virtual learning platform, and an inspiring university culture. The University of Liverpool is a Russell Group member that has met my expectations in all of these areas.

What do you enjoy the most about the programme so far?

The journey to achieving an online MSc can be challenging, but it is also incredibly rewarding. The British education system encourages independence and critical thinking, and the University of Liverpool provides comprehensive resources, much like an on-campus programme. We have access to online resources, scientific databases, mentorship in areas like English and statistics, and support from a dedicated faculty.

In addition, being a course representative has allowed me to develop my leadership skills and represent my fellow students at the university. The programme has given me a fresh perspective on analysing my research projects from a business management viewpoint, which has been invaluable.

What advice would you give to prospective students thinking of studying management online?

My advice would be to fully embrace the academic journey. Engage proactively with your lecturers and classmates, and stay resilient in the face of any challenges that online education presents. Remember, you are studying at a top-ranked university that will open many doors for you in the future. Make the most of your opportunity!

What are your plans for the future?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, my approach to future plans has become more flexible. I’m planning to apply for PhD management programmes between 2025 and 2026, with a particular focus on the tourism sector – a field I have been researching extensively over the past year. I look forward to applying the knowledge gained from my Management MSc to my research and professional endeavours in this field and beyond.
