What is computer science?

Computer science is the study of computers and technology, as well as their applications in our day-to-day lives. Any piece of technology you use in your daily life is the result of the work of dedicated computer scientists who research, develop and improve ICT equipment for use in all kinds of sectors across the world.

From engineers working on algorithmic processes, technicians working with computational machines, and software developers coding digital experiences, there are all kinds of computer science jobs. A computer science degree can fast-track you onto your chosen career path, giving you skills that can last you across a lifetime of computer science.

About the programme

Designed for students from a non-computing background, this programme explores the fundamentals of computer science and software development. You will build your knowledge of key trends and themes within the field, while expanding your horizons with specialist modules in artificial intelligence.

You will learn from leading experts in a culture of research excellence. Our passionate lecturers are highly regarded within the field for the topic they teach, from software development to machine learning. Our research-led ethos encourages students to participate in an innovative and stimulating environment.

You will have access to an online development environment to practice and refine your new technical skills, which also contains all of the technologies and software you will need for the course – inclusive within your tuition fee.

Computer science at the University of Liverpool is research-driven and internationally renowned for its cutting-edge work. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework rated us 5th in the UK for world leading (4*) research outputs, and 100% of research environment rated as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*).

We are especially well-regarded for our expertise in artificial intelligence, and our Digital Innovation Facility, which officially opened in 2022, provides a further hub for our collaborative research in emerging technologies.
