How to manage your mental health as an online student

Mental health is a growing topic of conversation worldwide and University Mental Health Day is dedicated to encouraging these discussions. In 2023, Student Minds found that a quarter of all students have a diagnosed mental health issue, which highlights the urgency to increase awareness and bridge the knowledge gap across the higher education sector. In this blog post, we outline five tips to successfully manage your mental health during your time as an online student.

Academic support

Tutors are on-hand to provide academic support throughout your studies. Whether you need help with an assessment question, want guidance with reading lists or an assignment, they welcome questions to help you navigate any challenges and can help to increase your confidence on the topic. Tutors can be contacted during office hours via email, call or Skype. Alternatively, you can join a study group to connect with fellow classmates.

Lecturers are always ready to meet the needs of students, while the Student Support team regularly monitors my progress.

Student support

We understand studying online can be overwhelming at times. To ensure you succeed throughout your academic journey, our dedicated Student Support team is committed to supporting you through various challenges. Whether you have an academic or non-academic query, need disability advice or have a question about career development, our team encourages open conversations and is ready to provide resources or signpost you for further assistance.

Connecting with peers

Building a strong social network can provide you with emotional support and help you navigate any academic challenges. Studying online with the University of Liverpool means you have the opportunity to connect with peers from all around the world. Remember to reach out to those in your network – study groups, clubs, and discussion forums all help to create a sense of student community and belonging.

Study skills

Developing strong study skills eases stress, anxiety, and ultimately improves overall performance. If at any point during your studies you feel you need some guidance, feel free to contact our Study Skills Team, as they will be on-hand to help you build confidence in your academic abilities. This ranges from planning your assignments and referencing, to using the online library.

Time management

On average, you will need to dedicate a minimum of 15-20 hours of study per module, per week. That’s why having strong time management skills gives you a greater sense of control over your workload. As an online student, we understand that balancing your time effectively allows you to fit work around other life commitments. Our virtual learning platform is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for you to study at a time that best suits you.
